My new album, Off the Cuff, has been a long time coming. My last album, Tread On My Dreams, came out in 2005, soon after my second child was born. I continued writing and recording over the following years, but I was feeling stymied by the creative process and the demands of raising two children. One day in the studio, I said to my friend, pianist, and engineer Doug Hammer, “Let’s just have some fun and record ‘Summertime’ in C minor.” No rehearsal—just piano, vocals, a tempo and a vibe. What happened in a few takes each was magical—and off the cuff. It seemed almost radical in a world of digital overproduction, but it feels right.
Thanks to Doug Hammer for his piano playing, engineering, wisdom, and friendship. Thank you to Bill, Isabel, and Will who inspire me to sing and to share the music that is in me. And thank you to my parents who were my first audience and taught me to want to live life off the cuff.
Song Order:
1. Keeping Out of Mischief Now
2. Summertime
3. Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce
4. My Romance
5. God Bless the Child
6. Someone to Watch Over Me
7. Route 66
8. My Coloring Book
9. Body and Soul
10. Blues in the Night
11. Over the Rainbow
12. Lost in the Stars
